Grief Grinch and Holidays
The holiday classic, How the Grinch Stole Christmas, can give us insight into how we, a grieving person, can manage the holidays.
In this classic tale, the Grinch wants nothing to do with Christmas. Sounds a bit familiar, doesn’t it? Grief has a way of tainting festivities. It seems to suck the joy and celebration out of us. We soon discover, as does the Grinch, that Christmas happens whether we want it to or not.
This is where we can learn from the Grinch as we learn to live with grief in life. The Grinch devised a plan, enlisted the help of his little dog Max and participated in the celebration.
We need a plan.
We start by asking questions and being completely honest with ourselves. We let our hearts guide us.
1) What do I want to do? Why?
2) What can I skip? Why?
3) What must happen? Why?
4) How can we remember and honor our loved ones?
5) Who can help me make it happen?
Our celebration probably will not resemble the Grinch, swooping into Whoville on a sleigh with a gift bag bulging with presents. However, like the Grinch, we may discover our hearts swelling with love, because our loved ones were remembered and our grief was honored.
