Oh Missy

As I wrap my head around the idea that my mom has passed, I naturally went to my photo albums and found this favorite.
I was apprehensive. I didn't want a cat to twine around her ankles. Mom wanted an outlet for her love affection and attention.
We headed for the shelter.
At first we looked at the older more mature cats. But, she was being pulled to the kitten room.
Kittens of all ages slept on blankets, curled around each other, forming a big fur pile. Other kittens were chasing each other, jumping, rolling, pouncing and climbing. There was a lot of activity in that room of kittens. My apprehension grew as I imagined one of these lively fur balls cavorting at mom's ankles and creating a trip hazard.
As she knelt down to pet a fluffy ball of energy, I watched a shy tiny yellow kitten creep closer and closer. It quietly snuck into view and stopped. Mom noticed the tiny yellow and white kitten. They both wanted and needed what the other could provide. Even their hair and fur matched! Love at first sight truly existed.
As I reflect on the relationship that developed between Mom and Missy, I am relieved that her need for a tiny companion was greater than my apprehension.
Missy provided something for mom to tend to; daily care and veterinary visits. Mom no longer came home to an empty house; Missy was there. Missy was the ornery to balance Mom's organization; water glasses tipped over and pencils on the floor. Missy provided listening ears when Mom wanted to talk. Missy was company to Mom's lonely days.
In return Missy got a comfortable lap to sit in, a cozy pillow to plop on and a small antique rocker to nap in. She received love. No longer alone in a shelter full of strangers. Missy had her human.
Mom and Missy, they were a good match, each caring for the other in their own unique way.
Mom moved on to the other side, the best side. Missy moved in with Mom's granddaughter.
